The statistics released, by the government on the crime rate in South Africa, do not report on hate crimes, as a category.
Crimes in general are also under reported. Diketso Mufamadi, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies sais “We know that over the years, the trust that people have in the police has declined. So in correlation, we know that there is a very high under-reporting of crime. People simply do not trust the criminal justice system.”
To make sense of these statistics, one must first compare the murder rate, with those of other countries. One report available to us, is that of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
