Rock Climber Murdered: David Wade, a well known and respected rock climber from Benoni, was shot dead this weekend, at Tranquilitas Adventure Farm on Saturday evening, 26 October 2019.
Tranquilitas Adventure Farm is a rock climbing and mountain biking mecca, situated on the hilltops of Waterval Boven, overlooking the Elands Valley in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
A police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlati said, the attack happened while Wade was visiting the camp and heard the security guards screaming for help as they were being held up by armed robbers.
“Although police arrived with their dogs shortly after the incident , they could not trace the suspects as it was raining,” said Brigadier Hlathi.
“According to his wife, he went to investigate and that was when he was shot”.
This senseless, cold-blooded murder has left the rock climbing community in shock.
Tributes have been pouring for the murdered climber.
Tony Lourens, a friend and the Publisher and Editor of SA Mountain Magazine, wrote on the Facebook page “I’m sitting at my desk, just barely able to control my anger and outrage at the senseless, cold-blooded murder of one of South Africa’s most motivated, dedicated and talented climbers, David Wade, friend, son, brother and partner – loved by so many.”
“This is indeed one of the saddest moments in the 18 years of SA Mountain’s existence, and one of the darkest, most depressing and heartbreaking times in all of South Africa, ” said Tony Lourens.
Lourens said Wade had been climbing for 10 years, adding that his life was “now sadly cut short by a terrible and unspeakable tragedy”.
David Wade was one of the most unassuming and loved characters.
