A marriage of forty five years was destroyed, when terrorists attacked a home in Centurion. Protecting their family, a desperate battle ensued, in which Gerrie Nel and his beloved dog was killed.
Centurion is an area with about 250,000 inhabitants in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, located between Pretoria and Midrand.
On Tuesday November 26, Gerrie Nel (68) and his wife Sandra, went out for dinner with their granddaughter Lee-Handre Blom and her fiancé, JP Nienaber.
It was to say goodbye to JP and Lee-Handre who is moving to New Zealand on Sunday.
The family went home after dinner and everyone conversed, outside on the porch. Sandra being cold retired and had just climbed in bed, when she heard shots.
Three terrorists had gained access to their property and was attacking her husband and future son in law.
“Gerrie and his dog fought bravely. He threw the attackers with a chair. When Max, Gerrie’s dog, saw that there was a fight, he wanted to protect Gerrie. A bullet went through Gerrie’s chest and a bullet hit Max as well, ” says Sandra.
Gerrie Nel loved his dogs. His Scottish terrier, Bella, was also injured in the shooting incident at his home.
According to Sandra, there was a fourth suspect waiting in a car outside the yard. They all fled in the car.
“Gerrie ran into the house and told me to call the police,” Sandra says, showing Gerrie holding his hand on his chest.
Gerrie collapsed in front of the door by the second staircase.

“Why did they shoot him? He never hurt anyone. ” said the bereaved Sandra.
Gerrie and Sandra met in Stilfontein High School. The couple had been married for 45 years.
According to Sandra, they were inseparable and did everything together.
They have lived in the same home for over 30 years, where the tragedy occurred.
Sandra had to inform their three daughters, Annelize Meyer, Antoinette Alexander and Estee Blom, on Wednesday morning that their father had died.
On social media, Antoinette said her father was gone too soon.
“I will never hear your laughter, your music and your love again. Why daddy?” she posted.
