On Wednesday 2 December 2020 at around 10 PM, Joan Joyi (nee Carolissen) in her eighties was assaulted and killed in her Charleston Hill house in Paarl in the Western Cape.

According to information from a close family member, Joan let two men who were apparently known to her into the house. She and her caregiver were overpowered and tied up, after which the suspects looted the house in search of valuables.

Joan was then strangled to death with a rope in front of her caregiver.

After the men fled, Joan’s caregiver managed to free herself and she contacted a security company for help.

Police are currently combing the crime scene for clues.

Paarl East police spokesperson, Capt. Basil Hippo, confirmed the incident and said that a case of murder and robbery is being investigated. Anyone with information on the case please contact Capt. Auckland Losper at 082 469 1509 or StopCrime at 0860 010 111.
