Belinda Huyzers (49) and her husband of twenty-five years Jan Huyzers (50) fell victim to a horrendous urban crime in which Belinda was murdered.

Belinda a celebrity in Run / Walk for Life circles in Kempton Park on the East Rand was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Jan was shot in the neck and taken to Arwyp Hospital.

The gang gained entry to the house by cutting open the burglar bars of a bathroom window. They then walked through the house and found Belinda and Jan in the lounge watching television.

The couple’s daughter, Anico (19), was hanging out with friends and listening to music when Jan and Belinda were attacked. They suddenly heard “two loud noises” that were probably the gunshots.

“They wanted to tie up my parents, but my father refused and it was then that they shot him in the neck and my mother in the chest,” says Anico.

Two of her friends went into the house to investigate and ran into one of the attackers who ordered them into one of the bedrooms. Meanwhile, Anico hid in a wendy house on the property and as soon as the attackers left she called the police.

According to Anico, her father saw three armed men. They stole laptops, cellphones, a wallet and Belinda’s jewellery.

Jan was discharged from hospital late Sunday afternoon after undergoing surgery to his neck during which the wound was cleaned and to determine if any serious damage occurred.

“My father is in a terrible state. When I spoke to him on the phone, it was the first time in my life that I heard him cry.

He said he was supposed to look after my mother, but he did not. I assured him he did what he had to do – it’s not his fault. ” says Anico.

Anico describes her mother as a strong, loving and joyful person who always made time for a joke.

“She was definitely the best mother and incredibly funny. She always tried to scare people and was the life of the party,” said Anico.

Peter Ackerman, the branch manager of the Run / Walk for Life in Kempton Park, says Belinda “will be greatly missed”.

At one stage she managed the club’s Facebook page and was also the official photographer of the club until about two years ago. She also served on the social committee.

“She was a very active member and it is actually strange to think that she is no longer there. I do not think any club member, including me, can think of one negative thing to say about her. She always smiled and was very helpful. ” says Ackerman.

Capt. Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. Police are investigating cases of burglary, murder and attempted murder.

No arrests have been made.
