Warren van der Vyver (44) the general manager of Jozi Trails, a non-profit that aims to uplift and improve the safety of nature trails in Johannesburg was murdered while jogging. Warren and his family were on holiday at Kenton on Sea in the Eastern Cape when he was stabbed to death on Wednesday 23 December 2020.
Jozie Trials which is funded by Hollard and the Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo (JCPZ) announced on social media:
“We are incredibly heartbroken at the loss of our General Manager, Warren van der Vyver. Although he had been at Jozi Trails for a short time, he made a massive difference to the organization. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time, Warren will be deeply missed.”
The body of 44-year-old Warren van der Vyver from Bryanston was found off Middle Beach Road early Wednesday morning by fellow joggers.
He had sustained a single stab wound while out jogging and had been robbed of his watch and cell phone.
A massive manhunt involving more than 80 people on the ground and two helicopters were launched around the bushy Kenton area for the killers.
A fellow runner from Kenton posted on social media:
“Sport has long been a place of connection. The opposite of conflict and division. Warren, an avid runner and cyclist, would have experienced the best in this element of South African community. Start lines, finish lines, unity. His tragic end is not reflective of our athletic community, and so we wish to gather, with the support of his wife and family, in solidarity and a statement against all crime.”
Ference Toth, who heads up the Kenton Nightwatch Community Policing Forum, said Van der Vyver’s family had posted a R30 000 reward while Hi-Tec Security added another R10 000 and community members donated R10 000 which he said was still growing.
Station Commander Tommie Parkinson said while the perpetrators were still at large, every lead was being followed up.
He appealed to anyone who might have information that could assist the investigation to contact the Kenton-on-Sea police.
